A brief club history
Welcome to the home page of Exiles at Bridge CC. Formed in 1977 as the Dolphin Exiles after being exiled from the hotel of the same name in Herne Bay, Kent. Exiles steadily drank their way around the pubs of Herne Bay, Whitstable and Canterbury before settling in to Bridge Recreation Ground in 2000.
In 2001 the club were admitted to the Kent Village Cricket League and from playing no competitive cricket for 23 years, Exiles at Bridge sported Saturday and Sunday sides as well as having two sides in the Pharon Canterbury Indoor League and a team in the Evening League.
By the end of 2006 Exiles had been promoted from division six and five. In that year we also said goodbye to Bridge recreation ground, moving to the stunning Highland Court ground, also in Bridge.
In 2007, Exiles at Bridge played their inaugural festival of cricket during the first weekend of August which culminated in an Old Exiles vs New Exiles fixture in memory of our founder and President, Mike Weldon. Later in the season, promotion to division three of the KVCL capped a most successful year in which Exiles were crowned divisional champions for the first time and two batsmen won trophies at the end of season league presentation. 2010 proved to be the clubs most successful league season in their history, going unbeaten to be promoted to Division Two and two of their batsmen being the highest run scorers in the entire Kent Village League.
In 2012 Exiles will play in division one of the Kent Village League for the first time; a far cry from Cherry Orchard in 1977. Yet the ethos of the club remains defined by its motto "Ludus Finivit Ergo Bibamus"; one that always has a beer after the game and revels in the social side of the sport.
The club boasts a playing membership of around 30, varying in age, shape and girth and welcomes all potential members irrespective of ability; if you are interested in joining the Exiles email Sean Ayling, at sean@ezywriter.co.uk.
